Election Integrity and Voter ID
Attorney General Van Hollen's commitment to “fighting crime and restoring integrity” includes protecting the integrity of the ballot box and Wisconsin's elections.
J.B. believes we must do all we can to ensure voters and the public have confidence in the electoral system and the outcome of elections. That's why the Department of Justice sent undercover agents into the field to uncover voter fraud in the City of Milwaukee. An undercover DOJ agent had his vote bought for $5 and a sandwich – the perpetrator was found guilty and convicted.
The veracity of our elections and the framework of our democracy is at stake when nefarious individuals or organizations seek to influence the outcome of election through illegal means.
- In 2000, Wisconsin recieved a black eye when Democrats were caught on videotape trading cigarettes for votes in Milwaukee.
- In 2004, Democrats again were caught trying to illegally affect the outcome of elections by slashing the tires of get-out-the-vote vans in Milwaukee. Five Kerry-Edwards campaign staffers, including the sons of two prominent Milwaukee Democrats, were charged with the election day tire slashings of 25 get-out-the-vote vehicles rented by Republicans.
- In 2006, Donovan Riley, a Democrat candidate for state senate, pleaded guilty to election fraud voting and paid a $10,000 fine for voting twice in the 2000 election.
Attorney General Van Hollen is committed to ensuring the integrity of our elections.
