Second Amendment
At this time, the Supreme Court is considering an important case that may bear on the people’s right to bear arms – a liberty Attorney General Van Hollen cherishs and the citizens of this state support as shown by a state constitutional amendment that passed overwhelmingly in Wisconsin.
The Attorney General sought permission to join in the lawsuit to protect our rights, but was denied by the Governor. However, the State Assembly granted the required permission and the Wisconsin Department of Justice filed a brief with the United States Supreme Court to dissuade them from issuing a decision in that case which would allow the federal government to carve into this important right.
Make no mistake about it, federal law permits law enforcement agencies to issue permits to those persons who qualify.
Recently, Van Hollen issued the first conceal carry permit to a retired Department of Justice law enforcement official.
Under the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act, Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police have the authority to issue the permits for retired members of their individual law enforcement agency to carry concealed weapons. Among the requirements to qualify, a person needs to have 15 years of service as a law enforcement officer, needs to pass an annual firearms certification and needs to be honorably retired. The permit must be issued from the agency from which the law enforcement officer retires.
The Attorney General has been a stauch supporter this law and recently issued the first conceal carry permit to a retired Department of Justice law enforcement official.

"I believe it is important to put our money where our mouth is. By having the Department of Justice take the lead when it comes to providing one of our own retired law enforcement officers with a permit to carry a concealed firearm, I believe it shows that we have the confidence in local law enforcement agencies in their ability to do this on their own."
