JB VanHollen for Attorney General

Public Safety Takes Partisan Hit
As the Madison Democrats wheel and deal to increase government spending on the backs of working families, they’re running roughshod over public safety and putting communities, schools and our children at risk.

As a fiscal conservative, I’ve returned more than $1.2 million to the state coffers through efficiencies, but the Madison Legislative Democrats who control state government’s purse strings are playing politics with public safety – slashing the Department of Justice’s budget more than most state agencies.

The liberal Democrats’ reckless state budget will:

• Allow for the early release of felons, including drug dealers, sex offenders, burglars, kidnappers, and repeat drunk drivers;
• Reduce GPS monitoring for sex offenders;
• Give criminals the opportunity to expunge their criminal records.

While the Madison Democrats gut public safety funding they’re going on a reckless pork barrel spending spree during the worst economic times in generations – spending your tax dollars on pork barrel items like $500,000 for refurbishing an opera house and $2.7 million for a “climate change laboratory.”

These Madison Democrats are proposing billions of dollars in new government spending, but chose to target the Department of Justice.

Why?

The outgoing Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin was recently quoted saying, “The only regret I have is we haven’t got the attorney general back. But we’re going to get that in 2010.”

DEM District Attorney Agrees with J.B.

A Democratic district attorney says proposed cuts to the Wisconsin Department of Justice budget could affect safety around the state. On Wednesday, Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said the 5% cut could lead to the elimination of 80 jobs at his agency.

Clark County DA Darwin Zwieg says the DOJ provides invaluable services to local law enforcement such as DNA analysis and the state crime lab something be used "more and more." Zwieg says the proposed cuts could even affect the bodily welfare of citizens or perhaps cost lives. Read the story here.

And so does another…
Joe DeCecco, the Democratic district attorney in Sheboygan County, also blasted the budget plan in a statement Wednesday, saying cuts would curtail the help his county gets from Justice on complex investigations and prosecutions. (Wisconsin State Journal: June 3, 2009)

J.B. Receives Voices of Courage Award
J.B. accepted the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault's Voices of Courage Award for his dedication to stopping sexual violence against women and children.

After accepting the award J.B. had this to say:

"I am pleased, honored and humbled to receive this recognition from WCASA. We share a deep concern for victims of sexual assault - especially our most vulnerable victims, our children. I'm proud to work with a group so committed to both combating and healing the wounds of society's most egregious criminal acts."
